POTTERS FOR PEACE REACTS TO THE TSUNAMI EMERGENCY

The recent Tsunami emergency in Southeast Asia has brought into sharp focus the possibilities inherent in the Potters For Peace Water Filter Technology. A comparable low cost water purification system simply does not exist.

In the past several years PFP has worked with several organizations to set up filter making facilities, two in Cambodia, one in Indonesia, and one in Thailand. These facilities were contacted immediately after the onset of the emergency to determine the feasability of providing filters. Logistics are being worked out for this, but these shops can only help with a miniscule fraction of the need.

 

PFP has contacted more than thirty relief organizations who might wish to cooperate with us in setting up more filter making facilities, and discussions are underway with several already interested in working with us.

As reported in the media, immediate emergency water supplies will be provided by various stop-gap measures such as flying in bottled water, U.S. warships utilizing their on-board filtering plants, and local breweries converting to potable water production.

Those are all only very short term solutions; it is estimated that the area's infrastructure won't be back to normal for a minimum of ten years. This is where the PFP Filter Technology comes in.

If we can set up filter making shops throughout the area, the immense long-term problem of locally available potable water will begin to be addressed. In addition to communicating with relief groups, PFP is meanwhile locating all pottery making centers in the area which might serve as workshop locations. Time is, of course, of the essence; many human lives hang in the balance.

Starting from scratch it is normally three months before a filter shop is in full production. In addition to providing water these facilities also provide employment.

With enough funding, Potters For Peace could also independently set up water filter shops.

Why "Potters for Peace?"

In 1986 a group of Washington DC potters held a benefit sale for the Guadelupe Carnay Pottery Co-op of Estel�, Nicaragua. A banner was made with the logo and name of "Potters for Peace" to promote the sale. That year several potters visited Estel� and other Nicaraguan pottery sites first hand. Potters for Peace was born.

PFP grew in the US as well. The pottery visit became an annual Pottery Brigade to foster a closer relationship between US and Nicaraguan potters. Material aid was collected and sent to various projects. As our friendship deepened, we realized that the most profound contribution we could offer was not our material excess, but our personal accompaniment.

Since 1989 we've maintained a staff in Nicaragua. This allows us to provide technical consulting, training and moral support when, where and how it's needed. We also sponsor exchanges between groups of Nicaraguan potters who have often never been able to share their experiences and skills outside their immediate environment.

PFP's focus now includes projects around the world. We have been contracted to assist in projects throughout Latin America, to Africa and South East Asia. PFP is a unique organization devoted to socially responsible development and grass roots accompaniment among potters. Benefit sales in North America are our main source of income.

POTTERS FOR PEACE STATEMENT IN OPPOSITION TO WAR IN IRAQ

Potters for Peace is a network of potters who are interested in peace and justice issues.

In 1986, Potters for Peace began supporting Nicaraguan potters while opposing the U.S. military aid to Nicaraguan contras. We believe that peace is achieved through justice, and justice is achieved through the creation of a society that values all other cultural traditions and through the building of cross-cultural relationships with peoples outside of our borders. Economic justice is a key underpinning.

Now, as the United States is engaged in a war on Iraq, Potters for Peace wishes to speak out. As an organization, Potters for Peace:

• does not support the use of military violence against Iraq.
• does not condone the current actions of the United States in its preparation for war against other countries in the Middle East, nor do we concur with past actions of the U.S. government against other countries that have resulted in the deaths of innocent people nor do we condone acts of terrorism on the part of any government or people.
• supported the United Nations weapons inspection process, and supports processes of resolution of international conflicts that are in accord with international law.
• supports the United Nations charter that maintains that no nation has the right to attack another.
